Catholic Studies began as a movement that sought to reinvigorate and revitalize Catholic higher education. Since 1993, Catholic Studies Programs and Centers have been formulated at colleges and universities throughout the United States. While the word "catholic" means "universal," Catholic Studies is not a "one-size-fits-all" term. The beauty of this movement is how each institution that houses a Center or Program integrates its own history and charism. While each individual institution's Catholic Studies initiatives, make-up, and curricula may vary slightly, there is a uniformity in the approach to integrate the Intellectual, Spiritual, Moral, and Cultural Traditions of the Church with all disciplines and cultures through dialogue.
Catholic education is rooted in seeking truth, beauty, and goodness through interdisciplinary and liberal approaches to learning. Highlighting the ways in which the rich traditions of the Church intersect and enoble all other professions and fields of knowlegde, is foundational to Catholic Studies Programs. These academic programs allow for students to earn degrees or certificates at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Colleges and Universities establish Centers and Institutes to foster academic programming, research, and service. Since 1993, Centers of Catholic Studies, or those with similar names have been established at various institutions to develop co-curricular experiences, promote research, and provide formation for students and faculty.
